Flames to face Burundi in first Afcon qualifier

The Flames will start their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualification campaign with a home fixture against Burundi between September 2 and 10.

This follows the release of the full fixtures by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the qualifiers to be played between September and November.

Mabedi: Preparations will be key

Apart from Burundi, Flames’ Group L also includes Senegal’s Teranga Lions and the Stallions of Burkina Faso.

Football analyst Kevin Moyo said the fixture is an advantage for the Flames, considering that Burundi is the weakest team in the group.

He said “The team which the Flames can match pound-for-pound is Burundi, so at least it takes some pressure off.

“It could have been a different story if they were to face either Senegal or Burkina Faso due to the gap in class and stature.”

Next on the menu for Malawi will be Burkina Faso within the same period.

The Flames will then play Senegal back-to-back starting away and then at home between October 7 and 15, according to the fixtures.

The Flames’ last away match will be against Burundi before winding up the campaign at home against Burkina Faso between November 11 and 19.

Two top teams in the group will qualify for the Afcon finals to take place in Morocco next year.

Flames coach Patrick Mabedi has said good preparations will be key in the campaign.

He said: “In Senegal and Burkina Faso, we are up against teams that have qualified for Afcon more often.”
